She recalls long winter days without a sunrise and the shifting colors of the aurora borealis as it crackled in the sky. She remembers windy snowstorms and temperatures at 60 degrees below zero.

“The snow is so white, the sky is so white and the wind is so strong, you can literally be flying in the air like you’re in outer space,” said Ms. Arbugaeva, 26. “There’s no point of reference. No horizon. No trees. You could be upside-down, and you would not know.”
